It’s called sludge and normally it’s a mixture of grease, dust, oil and rubber. It often appears on warehouses and factories floors.

Dangerous and hard to remove…this kind of greasy dirt (sludge) appears when the forklifts pass over the machinery oil leaks. The situation gets worst when this dirt is mixed with dust or residues at work.

Greasy and oily dirt can appear in the presence of:

  • natural and vegetable fats and oils (food industry)
  • industrial oils (factories)
  • protein-type substances (hospitals and food industry).

But can the sludge be removed? What are the tricks?

Cleaning such difficult dirt becomes very simple, with the right tools:

When adherent greasy dirt is insoluble in water it may seem very difficult to remove and deep clean it.

Industrial greasy dirt can be cleaned with a floor cleaner with suitable disc brushes, in combination with specific cleaning products.

  • Detergents with surfactantsare used to emulsify greasy dirt. The dirt sticks to one end of the surfactant molecule and the water sticks to the other end, so that the subsequent rinsing will remove all the dirt.
  • Solvents, on the other hand, are needed to solubilize a solid compound or a liquid insoluble in water, forming a solution that can be easily removed by rinsing.

It’s very important to know the type of dirt because it allows you to clean it in the most appropriate way, in technical and economic terms, and minimizing unexpected damage.

Preventing the dirt is cheaper and easier than carry out specific actions to restore the hygienic conditions, so keeping it clean is worthwhile.
