Stanguellini small big racing cars

The history of Stanguellini cars has its roots in a historical era when Modena was the place of incredible inventions, in the field of mechanics and the automobile. Those were the years of Enzo Ferrari, of Fiat at its greatest splendour, of Tazio Nuvolari.

Stanguellini was in that laborious hummus and helped to create legendary cars. It is important that young people know this and that the not so young car lovers remember it.

Vittorio Stanguellini

Vittorio Stanguellini, the founder

Vittorio Stanguellini was born in Modena and was a friend of Enzo Ferrari, with whom they shared a great passion for racing cars. Vittorio’s technical expertise led him to make racing cars. Initially, racing cars were built starting from Fiat road cars, as Vittorio had inherited the Fiat dealership for the province of Modena from his father Francesco.

Later, young Vittorio’s innate curiosity for innovation and maniacal research for perfection led him to design and build from scratch extremely competitive cars and achieve great victories all over the world, both in road and track competitions (such as the Monaco Grand Prix, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Mille Miglia, the Cuba Grand Prix, the Florio plate in Sicily, just to name a few).

The story of the legendary Junior Stanguellini

July 12, 1959. The German champion Wolfgang Berge Von Trips satisfied at the wheel of the Junior Stanguellini that gave him the victory on the Nürburgring track ahead of Michel May.

Thousands of drivers of the time drove the small Sanguellini cars, from simple enthusiasts to the most famous like Tazio Nuvolari, Manuel Fangio, Gigi Villoresi drove the small Stanguellini cars. In particular they loved the Junior Stanguellini, the single-seater car produced from 1958 to 1960.

The Juniors have achieved several victories, both in Italy and in Europe (at that time the European Championship was considered “world”), winning among others the European Championship in 1958/59, the Italian Championship in 1958/59/60, the G.P. Montecarlo Junior 1958 with Michael May, the Vanderbilt Cup (U.S.A.) 1960 with Harry Carter and the G.P. Nurburgring.

From Junior to Formula 3

Around 1962, the Junior was transformed into today’s Formula 3. The new technical rules provided that a production engine already used in road cars had to be used. All English competitors, starting from Lotus, applied the Ford engines of Anglia’s road cars, because they were more evolved and already used “the overhead camshaft”, which allowed them to deliver a considerable more power with the same displacement.

Stanguellini, being tied to Fiat for commercial, but above all emotional reasons, continued to use the Fiat engine with the valves controlled by “rods and rocker arms”. Even on the first beautiful Stanguellini Formula 3, Vittorio chose a Fiat engine that unfortunately turned out not to be competitive anymore, so after a short time he decided to abandon the competitions and devote himself only to the commercial activity as Fiat dealer.

1960, Autodromo di Monza. Marcello Mastroianni is about to test the Junior Stanguellini.
