What a Linoleum floor is made of and how to clean it

Linoleum is a mixture of oil, flax, wood and cork sawdust, dyes and resins, which is calendered on a jute backing.

The inventor of linoleum

He invented linoleum, replacing the rubber he used to coat floors with the oxidation products of linseed oil (which gives the name to linoleum).

Patented in 1863 by the Scotsman Frederick Walton, twenty linoleum factories were already active in England before the end of the century, multiplying in many other European countries to become one of the most widespread flooring systems in public buildings.

Like the more recently produced vinyl or rubber floors, it has features that still today make it a valid solution for offices, schools, sports facilities, hospitals, canteens.

It is usually treated with waxy protections to allow better wear resistance.

Qualities

  • excellent thermal and acoustic insulation

What not to do

  • NOT treat it with strong alkaline products, such as varequine, caustic soda and dewaxing agents that can bleach it and make it very fragile, specifically I can even create micro cracks, called “ragnatele”
  • NOT use too much water because the jute support underneath could detach from the mixture.

Linoleum in a children’s hospital

To achieve maximum hygiene, the linoleum has been protected with two layers of sealant and three layers of acrylic wax, then polished at super high speed using the 1500 rpm single-brush and cream disc.
